Maharishi Gargeya, son of Garga, taught the Agama Gargeyagam to his disciples. Sage Gargeya fully understood the glories of Lord Vishwakarma, the primordial creator. It was through him that sages like Narada and others learned the essence of Vishwakarma. This description is found in the Nagarkhand and other sections of the Skanda Purana. The word 'Aagam' has been said in Shabdaratnakaraadi in this way - The method of worshiping God and the related knowledge are contained in many scriptures such as - Pancharatram, Vaikhanasam, Kamikagamam, Vishwakarmagam, Shaivagamam, Karanagamam etc. are such Agam scriptures in which it has been described well. Gargeyagam consists of 16 chapters and over 680 verses. This scripture begins with a praise of Vishwakarma and then describes the Vastu hymn, the Murti hymn, the sanctum sanctorum, the Drishthapana, the Shankusthapana, and the construction of the shilpashala.
गर्गपुत्र गार्गेय महर्षि ने अपने शिष्य मुनियों को आगम् गार्गेयागम् का उपदेश दिया। आदिम् सृष्टिकर्ता विश्वकर्मा भगवान् की महिमाओं को पूर्णरूप से गार्गेय ऋषि को मालूम था। इन्हीं के द्वारा नारदादि मुनियों ने विश्वकर्म तत्त्व को जाना है। इस प्रकार का वर्णन स्कन्दपुराण के नागरखंड आदि में मिलता है। 'आगम्' शब्द को शब्दरत्नाकारादि में इस प्रकार से कहा गया है- देवपूजा विधि तथा तत्सम्बंधी विषयकज्ञान अनेक शास्त्रों में निहित हैं जैसे- पञ्चरात्रम्, वैखानसम्, कामिकागमम्, विश्वकर्मागम्, शैवागमम्, कारणगमम् आदि ऐसे आगम शास्त्र ग्रन्थ हैं जिनमें अच्छी तरह से वर्णन किया गया है। गार्गेयागम में 16 अध्याय तथा 680 से अधिक श्लोक संख्या हैं। यह शास्त्रग्रन्थ विश्वकर्मा-प्रशंसा से आरम्भ होकर वास्तुहोम, मूर्तिहोम, गर्भगृह-प्रवेश, दृक्स्थापना, शंकुस्थापना तथा शिल्पशाला निर्माण का वर्णन करता है
