Life And Philosophy Of Maitreyanatha Asanga And Vasubandh
N A De S Amaratunga · Motilal Banarsidass
Asanga and Vasubandhu were great ancient Buddhist philosophers who lived in the 4th Century CE. The identity of Maitreya, however, was controversial, he was believed to be a Bodhisatta who lived in Thavthisa heaven but modern scholars have arrived at the realization that he could not have been a mythological being but a historical human who was one of the founders of Yogacara. In the previous centuries dissention and schism had caused considerable changes in the Dhamma that Buddha had preached. The dissenting views were in the main due differences in interpretation of what Buddha said and also the introduction of new ideas often borrowed from other religion and philosophies, Maithreyanatha, Asanga and Vasubandhu had greatly contributed to the philosophical dialogue that emanated from these differences of opinion.
